Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became... A TEACHER
So, here is the deal. I could write this ridiculously lengthy, wordy, emotional story about how I went through my entire life knowing I wanted to be a teacher, the self discovery I had in Undergrad to become a Special Education teacher, the trials and consistent ups and downs of #gradschoollife, but I think I basically summarized it right there.
The real story here is what has been happening for the past week.
It all started on a Tuesday (and boy, it did feel like the club was "going up," cause that Tuesday CHANGED MY LIFE). Anyways, I got a phone call while nannying from the Grossmont Union High School District. I was being contacted for an interview for a Mild to Moderate Special Education Position at... a school... and, of COURSE, I accepted the interview. I could not believe that I was going to get to interview for such a major district in San Diego for a Special Education position before I even did my student teaching!
Then Thursday, Interview Day, came. I got new charcoal grey ankle pants (because who says you can't look professional and awesome?!) and paired them with a sweet peplum top, black blazer, and fantastic black cutout (yet totally professional) heels. I had made folders for each person on the interview panel with all my information, resume, copies of transcripts, and more papers that killed lots of trees, and these folders, as any good school-spirited teacher would do, were in the school's colors. I drove to the interview, blasted some Shawn Mendes (BAE) and Worship music (JESUS > everything), car danced, and sat in my car before the interview in "Super Hero pose" to build confidence (a little something I picked up from Grey's Anatomy... thank you, Netflix). I prayed and I walked into the castle (aka the Grossmont Union High School District office). Checked in. Walked upstairs. Kicked myself for forgetting my water in the car (OMG SO PARCHED), and sat outside of the conference room. And then... I was called in.
To spare all the details of the interview, I left feeling good. Not like "totes got the job," but also not "I am going to crawl in a hole." The interview team (school's principal, SpEd department head, Math department head, SpEd Director for GUHSD, and Program Specialist) were wonderful and so kind. I was so thankful to have them as my first interview panel.
Friday. 10:16am. My phone rings. The director of Special Education is calling. I panic and obviously don't answer. I listen to the voicemail, a typical "call me back." Panic again. Dad convinces me to call back. I go hide in my room, take a deep breath, try not to sound nervous on the phone. She answers.
She answers and she OFFERS ME THE JOB.
Okay, okay, okay, I wrote all of this to say I got a job. A real-life, full time, with benefits, salaried, SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHING POSITION. (PTL for getting PAID to student teach!!!)
Oh... maybe you want to know where? Well.. for those of you that know me, you know that I am a die hard Steele Canyon Cougar. But, no, I did not get a position at SCHS. No, no, no, through God's hilarious sense of humor (and also grace, love, and wonderful authorship), I will be starting my full time teaching career at what used to be my rival high school, but will now turn in to my home....
GIVE ME A V-A-L (v-a-l) H-A (h-a) L-L-A (l-l-a), what's that spell?! VALHALLA!!!
That is right, as of today, I have signed the contract and will be a part of the ORANGE NATION. GO NORSEMEN! (Still getting used to that, also need to buy orange clothing now...)
